Steinunn Thorarinsdottir is a world-renowned Icelandic sculptor, a one-of-a-kind master in transforming raw, hard, and cold materials into human-like sculptures. She was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, and she lived in England and Italy where she got her education as a sculptor, at the Portsmouth College of Art and Design and Portsmouth Polytechnic (UK) and at the Academy of Fine Art (Italy). Steinunn has been working professionally for more that 40 years and has exhibited widely all around the world: in the UK, Italy, Germany, Japan, China, the USA, Australia and Canada. Her works are in private and public collections such as The University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Elgiz Museum of Contemporary Art, Istanbul, Turkey; Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, GA, USA; Collection of Carl XVI Gustav, the King of Sweden; The Reykjavik Museum of Art and National Gallery of Iceland to name a few. Steinunn has through the years done numerous commissions both indoor as well as site specific outdoor work, that’s why her artworks can be found in galleries, museums, universities, parks, airports, streets, and fields around the world. In Copenhagen her works can be seen in many palces such as in Rigshospitalet, by St. Jakobs Kirke in Osterbrogade, in the courtyard of Finansrådet in Amaliegadeand outside Terminal 3 at Copenhagen Airport. Her CONNECTIONS exhibition can be found at the Danish Institute for Advanced Study, at the Center for War Studies, around the SDU (Syddansk Universitet København) campus, at Nordatlantisk Hus and at Platanhaven in Odense City centre. Whereas, in 2015, Steinunn’s exhibition PLACES was staged in various locations in Copenhagen in collaboration with the City of Copenhagen and Galleri Christoffer Egelund. In 2009, Steinunn was awarded the Order of the Falcon by the Icelandic President, Iceland’s highest honour. This was for her contribution to the Icelandic and international art communities. In 2017, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Hull, UK. Steinunn now lives and works in Reykjavik, Iceland. The most characterizing feature of Steinunn Thorarinsdottir’s works is the use of androgynous human figures. In her sculptures the shape of the human body arises from cold aluminium and steel and stands strong with welcoming arms, ready to give or receive whatever comes. The androgynous human sculptures lacks facial expressions yet they embodies the human emotions so effectively, representing the general human psyche rather than a distinct sex or ethnic identity. The humanlike figures are open curious spirits with a strong appearance that always leaves us amazed.
