The Danish artist Jonas Pihl (born in Køge, Denmark, 1978) combines carefully painted figurative elements with psychedelic abstract patterns, creating cosmic visions where the known and the unknown intertwine in surprising ways. A fascination with space and the creation of the cosmos plays a central role in Pihl's art, as, according to Pihl, the cosmos was not only created once billions of years ago but is continually created with each passing now. The interplay of recognizable, albeit fanciful, scenes, and abstract patterns places humankind in a cosmic context that reminds us of our insignificance, but yet, in Pihl's work, the human imagination seems like a force capable of conquering all. By choosing unconventional surfaces for his paintings, such as spheres and irregular grounds, Pihl also challenges the traditional conception of the painting as a two-dimensional surface. Many of his recent works are made with transparent ink on unbleached linen, allowing the weave to show through and creating a rough and natural look. He graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' MFA programme in 2008 and is featured in prominent public and private collections like those of Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Københavns Kommunes Kulturudvalg, Martin Nielsen and Jens Peter Brask. In 2018 he was commissioned to create the largest mural in Northern Europe, Tvillingerne, in Aalborg. Most recently, his art could be experienced at the exhibition Se i mørket (Seeing in the dark) (2024) at Himmerland Museum of Art.
