In Aline Alagem’s works, feminin sensuality is both a metaphor and realization of manifesting one’s self. The compositions and collage-like altered scenes in Alagem’s figurative paintings hint to hidden layers that flow beneath the surface. Moments of secret longing and pleasure are “planted” in frosty arctic landscapes, asking about the possibility and impossibility of reaching the edge of desire- becoming it, or being lost in it. Depicting these moments of glorious, complex intimacy between women or from their perspective, challenges the historical position of women as passive subjects, bringing them down from their male made pedestal to an arena where they are no longer only the vessels for other’s desires, but the feeling, longing heroines creating their own story.    Alagem (born Israel 1981) completed her BFA at the Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem (2005), during which was awarded an exchange student grant at the SVA NY. She is a recipient of the Pais Fine Arts Grant and the Yehoshua Rabinovich art fund and has participated in the Cite residency program, Paris (2011).After completing her studio residency program at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2016), Alagem relocated to Berlin.
